the $5000 envelope

I dropped off a finished grant application today, and besides the fact that grants are wonderful life giving, dream fulfilling golden drops of mana from the heavens, they’re totally useful even if you don’t get the money. What filling out a grant application does is make you think about your art in a way that a lot of us tend to avoid; in a logical straight forward fashion. No one is asking you to defend your art or your choices, they’re simply asking you to explain it to them. What do you do? Why do you do it? How do you go about doing it? You learn a ton by filling one of these things out, and I’ve found that by doing them every few months, it really helps me check myself and sets me back on course towards goals I’d like to accomplish.

This recent one reminded me that I haven’t really been experimenting as much lately. Lots of writing and playing with people, but not enough good old fashioned drum lab type stuff. Here’s some results from today so far.
