* this post is part of a project called Special for You, my homage to the amazing Soundway compilation “Nigeria Special – Modern Highlife and Afro Sounds 1970-76*
It’s January and high time to get back to learning hi-life stuff. Today’s challenge was a tune by the Funkees, a band made up of Nigerian war veterans. That pretty much enables you to do or play whatever you want in my mind, and these guys do. This is a seriously danceable track called Akulu Owu Onyeara that’s one of my favourites on the album for sure. There’s a completely insane hi hat thing that goes on throughout the tune that’s going to take some serious work to get down, so I didn’t play it for now. It’s a coordination thing that I can hear in my ears how it works, but can’t get my body to cooperate. I guess that’s half the reason I’m doing this . I’m happy with the tones that came out on this one, partly due to the discontinued toy my friend Marc DePape kindly lent me. I want one, or 6.
Anyway, here’s the orignal -
The more I listen to it the more insane it gets, I love that groove. I’ll come back with a tighter version, but here’s what I’ve got today with the time given to me.
Here’s some other amazing Funkees stuff not on Nigeria Special, but just as good.
